How to Get Inexpensive Health Insurance

Looking to buy health insurance? Want to know how to get inexpensive health insurance with a reliable company? Here’s how …

Types of Health Insurance

There are four basic types of health plans:

Indemnity Plans – These plans let you choose your own doctor, and it pays all of your medical bills up to a specified daily amount for a specified number of days.

Indemnity plans are the most flexible health care plans, but they are the most expensive plans and they involve the most paperwork.

HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations) - With these plans you pay a monthly premium to join a network of physicians and hospitals. You must choose a primary care physician within the network who oversees your medical care.

HMOs are the most restrictive of all the health insurance plans, but they’re also the cheapest plans. Co-payments are either very low ($5 to $10) or are free.

PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations) – With these plans you also pay a monthly premium to join a network of physicians and hospitals. You can choose to see whatever doctor you prefer, but if he or she is not part of the network you’ll need to pay an extra fee.

PPOs cost a little more than HMOs, but a lot of people prefer them because they are less restrictive. Co-payments average $5 to $10.

POS (Point of Service plans) - These plans are a combination of HMOs and POSs. You must choose a primary care physician to oversee your healthcare treatment, but you can see a non-network physician without having to pay extra fees if your primary care physician refers you to him.

POS plans cost a little more the PPOs and HMOs, but are more flexible. Co-payments are about the same as for HMOs and PPOs.

Which Plan is Best?

In order to determine which health insurance plan will best meet your needs, you need to find out the following:

* Does the plan cover the services you need?

* What co-pays, deductibles, and coinsurances does the plan have?

* How much freedom do you have in choosing your own physician?

* What is the waiting period for pre-existing conditions?

Inexpensive Health Insurance

In order to get the best rates on health insurance you need to comparison shop. Thanks to the Internet, you don’t have to spend hours on end calling local insurance companies or surfing single-company websites to get quotes. Now you can go to an insurance comparison website, fill our a simple questionnaire, and get quotes from multiple comapnies.

The best comparison sites only deal with A-rated companies so you know the company you choose will be reliable and will give you good service. Theses sites also have an insurance expert on hand to answer any insurance questions you may have. (See link below.)

Photography Insurance-Insurance for the Photographer

Part and parcel of establishing your own photographic business is establishing your own legal entity. This means establishing yourself for taxes. This is broader than the scope of this article, because every country has it’s own business rules. Also every state in federal countries has different legal rules. The first thing you need to do is register your business according to your local rules, if you are unsure of this either take legal advice or go and see your local town hall and ask them about local legal requirements.

You then need to separate your private finances from your business finances. Even if you pay your bills with a credit card you should have a separate business card.

Once you have set up your business, then you have to ensure that that business is protected, and one of the ways you can do this is to insure yourself against risks to your business. Whilst you should be able to insure an overall business policy for your business you need to make sure that all the liabilities you face both fiscally and legally are covered. We live in a litigative society, and whilst insurance may seem an expense you can do without, it gives you peace of mind. You need to consider insurance for your errors, omissions and liabilities, as well as ensuring your equipment for loss or damage. You also need an insurance against a claim made as a result of an accident, occurring whilst you are conducting a photographic session.

All sorts of simple errors and omissions can occur between taking the photographs and giving the finished image to the customer. Film can get lost either through your fault or the processor’s. Images may be lost whilst shipping, or in the postal system. Images may also be lost by private carriers, paying a premium price for services may not be sufficient, do you know whether or not you are covered by their insurance, and if you are what is the limit? Whilst it is possible for images to be lost in Cyberspace you should be able to cover those eventualities yourself, by having back up systems. You may release the images to the incorrect party. As well as this there may be a human delay and you may find yourself in the wrong venue, with no time to correct this.

There are other errors that you can be held responsible for this; your customers may sustain a personal injury whilst they are in your home or studio. It is advisable to protect yourself with liability insurance. If someone trips or falls over a piece of equipment, you can be held responsible for the damage. One of your customers may even trip and sustain and injury outside your house on the steps, but if they are coming to your house for business purposes, the business is often deemed to be liable.

Depending on what type of work you are doing you may need an insurance policy for your models. Supposing you take a model to photograph to an outside location and she or he is struck by lightning, or a stray horse, etc? You will also have to ensure that all your equipment is also covered whilst you are on location, as well as inside your normal working area. If you work internationally on location, it is very important to ensure that everything is covered on an international basis.

When you protect your equipment make sure that remember to insure all of it. This does not include just your camera, lenses, and other obvious pieces, but your computer, fax machine, as well as all your software. If you use all your own dark room, then there is that equipment to insure as well. Even if you are using your house, your office equipment will not be included on a normal domestic policy.

As well as all these things you need to have a type of health insurance that covers you if you are sick, or cannot make an assignment. Also what happens when your car breaks down, and you miss a wedding? All sorts of events can and do occur.

It is also normal for any individuals to cover themselves for loss of income. You need to have an insurance policy for this, not just for your health expenses, but to ensure that over basic bills such as mortgages or repayments are covered.

If you have employees, then the business of insurance becomes more complicated, you need to ensure against their actions against your customer’s as well. Supposing they get caught up in a claim for sexual harassment, then you yourself are responsible. Each added little extra thing which you ensure yourself against will probably only add a few extra dollars to your annual bill, and the dollars spent may save a lot of heartache later.

You can ask to extend your private insurance to include a business package, or there are several companies that ensure the professional photographer’s needs with a separate package of comprehensive insurance. It may also be necessary to extend your vehicle insurance for the transportation of equipment, or it may be cheaper to include such things as loss of equipment from an unattended vehicle on your business package. It is not advisable to assume that you are covered for liabilities on existing insurance policies; it is always safer to check.

US Auto Insurance Ends at the Mexican Border

Mexico’s Constitutional Law states individuals are presumed guilty until proven innocent. Mexican Law Enforcement Officers have the right to detain anyone they feel are in violation of the law. They have the right to pull you over, search your vehicle, question you, impound your vehicle, detain/arrest you, send you to jail, and hold you until arraigned without sufficient probable cause. They can do this because you are presumed guilty until you prove you’re innocent.

How does that apply to auto insurance? If a law enforcement officer feels you have broken a law while operating a vehicle, you are presumed guilty. Once a claim is filed with yours or the other party’s insurance company, it is the responsibility of the insurer to determine whether to overturn your guilt or leave you on your own for legal representation. Example, you and another vehicle have a fender bender with no clear evidence as to who was at fault. At that point, the law enforcement officer has the right to arrest both parties until arraigned in front of a judge. The judge can then rule as to who is at fault. U.S. Auto Insurance companies are not prepared to offer liability coverage for this occurrence.

U.S. Insurers offer liability coverage with the assumption one of the parties involved in the accident are at fault, not determined by a court. U.S. Carriers offer legal representation to their policy holders if a claim or suit is brought against them as a covered loss, stated in the insurance policy. If the legalities of the loss are dictated by a court, Carriers are not willing to offer legal representation because if they are defending the guilt party, they are spending more money than allocated in the collected premium. Mexican Insurance carriers are prepared to offer liability coverage because their policies are designed in conjunction with Mexican Constitutional Law.

Word of advice, when traveling south of the border with a vehicle, get Online Mexican Travel Insurance from one of several well established carriers. Most of the Online Mexican Travel brokers offer the same carriers such as GNP (oldest), ACE, and GE and everything you need to quote, bind and issue coverage is readily available on the website.

Health Insurance Options and COBRA Insurance

Employer based health insurance provides coverage for tens of millions of Americans. Unfortunately, many employees will be without coverage if they lose their job, quit, retire or if their company goes out of business. In most cases, an employee can elect COBRA upon losing employment. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act will provide 18 months of additional coverage so long as the group consisted of 20 or more employees. In Ohio, if the group is under 20 employees COBRA allows for up to six months of coverage. This law is sometimes referred to as “Baby COBRA.”

There are certain rules regarding who is eligible to elect COBRA and what the cost will be, but in all cases COBRA is temporary insurance for the insured. In addition, the expense to the former employee can be significant. Ultimately, the cost will be determined by the premiums for the former plan plus a 2% administrative fee. Former employees are often surprised to discover how much it will cost to elect their company insurance through COBRA.

Individual Health Policies for Healthy Consumers

Once their COBRA benefits have run out, individuals and families will need to search the individual health market. If you are in good health, usually there are few problems obtaining an individual or family policy. However, if the former insured is in poor health – finding a comprehensive policy can be very difficult. There are providers who will insure high risk individuals, but typically the benefits to the insured are far less than their employer sponsored plan. When possible, an individual in poor health may only be able to find adequate coverage in another employer sponsored plan. The state of Ohio does offer an HMO plan providing open enrollment with select companies. The coverage offered will vary by county and the enrollment window will differ from company to company. However, you can expect these plans to be very expensive.

Purchasing Permanent Coverage

Thus, it is advisable to explore your options as soon as you lose your employer sponsored coverage. COBRA can be helpful, but because it is not permanent, new coverage will usually be needed at some point. One potentially difficult scenario can be easily avoided by shopping for insurance early. Electing COBRA while in good health and waiting to apply for permanent coverage until the allotted 18 months expires is a risky proposition. What if your health changed for the worse during that period of time? You may have difficulty finding coverage in the individual market. However, you would have been insurable had you applied for a plan immediately after becoming unemployed. In many cases, the permanent individual coverage would be less expensive as well.

In summary it is always advisable to obtain permanent health insurance coverage while you are in good health. Once accepted, you can keep this coverage for as long as you need it. If you rejoin a group plan later, you may elect to drop the coverage or maintain it if you feel that you have a superior plan.
